A French Basket

There is something about a basket that conjures up that feeling of summer and strolling around a market with a basket filled with fresh produce and flowers, this basket was another find from the little French shop and as soon as I saw it I loved it.

I have quite a few baskets in my home because I love the texture they provide but they are also great for storage.

Another find I have had recently are these little steps, I can't tell you how many chairs I have broken by standing on them when changing curtains etc...so these will be well used and they just fold up and lean against the wall.

Another basket. I have had this hanging basket a very long time and the liner had to be replaced but a pet hate of mine are the liners in the shops at the moment especially the paper ones, so I have tried to come up with something that looks good for the few months till the plants become established. This hessian sack bag is something I picked up in our local pound shop, I cut down one side of the seem and lined it with newspaper to hold the compost. I'll let you know if it last the summer.

  4. Your basket is a lovely find - the texture of basket work is a great addition to a living space I agree. The cowparsley is on its last gasp around us here, I always miss it when it goes over.

  7. I too share a love of baskets. In fact I'd go as far to say I'm addicted... at the moment I'm waiting for UPS to deliver me a vintage picnic basket... I can't wait, but I'll have to find room for it in this little place! Oh, and I love the step ladder, I'm on the hunt for some at the moment. Lx

  8. That is an excellent idea for your hanging basket, looking forward to see how it holds up. Those step ladders are so versatile, I have even used mine as a display for houseplants.

  10. Hello Deborah

Baskets are beautiful, functional, natural and biodegradable. They come in an endless variety of shapes and sizes and my life would be poorer without mine. I'm sure you will find all sorts of uses for your little french basket.

  12. I love your little basket. When I lived in England, lots of people used baskets to pop out to the local shops, as did I. Here in Ireland people call me "little red riding hood" when I use my basket.Occasionally when working on a building site, I would get real stick from the builders when I presented my lunch in a basket. I don't care, I love them and they are so much more environmentally friendly than plastic bags, not to mention prettier. Your little step ladder is great too. Love Linda x

  13. Do you call that flower "Queen Anne's Lace" in England too?

  14. Hello:
So many really goodly things are included in this post, not least your use of baskets. Why is it that so few people carry a proper basket to shop with these days, preferring for some reason a plastic carrier?

Your vintage steps are wonderful and will, we are sure, be exceedingly handy. We could do with them ourselves. And the sacking to line the hanging basket is an excellent and practical idea - one to be copied.

Thank you so much for the comments which you have left on our recent posts. They are much appreciated.

  22. Deborah, thanks so much for your lovely comments. Lucky you having a hardware store around the corner. I have several favourite paint companies, I probably use Little Greene and Farrow and Ball the most. A lot of people think they are too expensive and have them mixed by a Dulux dealer, but it's just not the same. The first 2 companies use natural pigments in their paints and so the colours are more subtle and the finish more chalky. However, for painting bits of furniture in white shades, Dulux is absolutely fine, I also like Homebase's own paint (which I suspect is actually made by Dulux). For old houses a website called Francesca's Paints sells the most wonderful limewashes in gorgeous edible looking colours. My favourite shade to use at the moment is Little Greene's French Grey. Hope this is helpful, and not "too much information"! Have a great weekend, love Linda x
